How to Build a Barangay Learning Center

1. Stretch

Before getting started on a new learning center, stretch. There's hard work ahead. Books need to be moved and buildings built. What a pity if you were to befall an injury. There is a bit of planning that needs to be done. What "barangay" or little towns, have expressed interest in having a center? Which have ready-built and potentially vacant buildings? How safe will the books be? Are community members willing to volunteer in construction and maintenance? What are the needs of the local community? Do they need car repair manuals or extra text books because they are near a small university?

2. Donations

In order to have a learning center, you need to have books. Talking to friends and organizations is a great way to find out who has excess books that they would be glad to have taken off of their hands for a good cause. When making pickups, be on time and courteous. Call ahead and verify the pickup time and whether or not the donating party needs you to bring extra boxes or a spare dolly. When picking up books, use proper lifting posture and leave the place cleaner than when you first arrived. Donations are the key to creating learning centers. Without large donations of books, creating learning centers in the Philippines would not be possible.

3. Communication

It is crucial to have the local community on board with the learning center. Simply dropping in and leaving a learning center is not enough. Strong community ties and allowing the community to discover the value and need of the center is best. What is the use of a learning center, if the community does not feel it is their own and thus does not take care of it or the books? The learning centers should not be seen as an act of charity but as involvement.
